Our Reference Librarian has written us a review of his favorite book, The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human by Siddhartha Mukherjee.

“This fascinating book covers so much ground, and it is all captivating.
If you thought high school biology was interesting, you will be amazed
at how much more there is to know about cells. Within the cell itself
there are all kinds of interesting structures: cells have a kind of a
skeleton; they have a delivery system within the cell (a kind of a tunnel
system); they have a kind of a grinder for used proteins; the genes can
be turned on and off. Each organ has its own kind of cells, with all kinds
of fascinating qualities. The cells within the body talk to each other.
There is a long and interesting discussion of the immune system, the
way cancer cells work, the way embryos develop and cells differentiate.
The book is written clearly. One does not need to be a biologist to
understand what is being said. I highly recommend it.”
